Farewell Party (08 June 2007)

June 9th, 2007 Posted 12:18 pm

Yesterday, we had our farewell party. It was solely planned and organised by our year2s and year1s.  During the first part, the juniors sang “If you hold on together” with james, yinwhee, hajar, fahmi, hendra and wani playing the kulintangs, and our new kulintang sectional leader- meiling conducting. Like what the Atika said, we joined this cca instead of choir for a reason. But i dont think it’s so horrible. At least it is audible to ears. Then, we were separated into four groups and played taboo. Taboo is a game whereby a group will send one representative. The representative will have some cards with words on it. Let me illustrate for you:

The representative will try ways for his members to guess the word “sarong” by talking and describing it out. However, the representative must not say the words like “malay, cloth, etc”

Then, we played “Monkey finding chairs”. It’s something like musical chair but another way. The “monkeys” will have to snatch an empty chair to sit down. The people who are playing are to ensure that they do not have empty chairs at their sides, if not, they will be forfeited. A direction (left or right) will be given, and everyone will have to move. After many many rounds, we had quite a number of people forfeited. So, it was time for punishment. Leong gave the instructions and the people will have to follow.

After the games, the rest of the yr3s came from their lessons. So, we started the “award presentation ceremony”. We were given 30 seconds to say our “thank-you” speech. But the people before me did not. When it was my turn, Miss Lim gave me an envelope. Inside, there’s a cd with my angklung sectional leader successor-Wani’s notes, certificate, our own cca collar badge.

So, i started my “30++sec” of speech, describing my feelings about being a SL, and the wonderful times i had with my year2s during sectional. This is quite an unprepared speech. I missed out alot of people. The “30 sec” time limit was driving me crazy! So, i’ve decided to pen down my actual speech here. (the speech will be published after this entry)

Then, we viewed a short video clip done by ili and hendra. Memories.. memories.. Started tearing. pictures of our performance at imm, grand copthrone hotel, lau pa sat, esplanade, syf.. And the most saddening part was the “people that we’ve lost“- In the memory of Fadinah.. I have been controlling tears from flowing down. At the moment, i feel like scolding ili and hendra. Of all, why this? why rub salt to our wounds? I was forcing myself to smile, but i failed. The most touching part was the picture taken with my sections. All my juniors with me holding a flower. The message there on the video was “the year2s will always support you“. The message was so strong as i feel that the “you” is refering to me.

Then, we had our food. Our utensils are nicely labelled.I love the food. got bee hoon, chicken, hotdogs, fishballs and eclair! While eating, this 2 girls were bullying me. my dear shir just went to Macau just today, and this two girls- sherlynn and edith act 亲密. feed each other, making me jealous. “Shir! must faster come back. See? they all so fast bully me le.”

It was soo sweet when 3 of the yr1s gave us biscuits. Although they dont know us, but they made this for us! That’s so sweet of them la. im so touched!I used back our orange ribbon we used during lau pat sat performance. 我想回到过去.

Carrie Underwood- I’ll stand by you

Carrie Marie Underwood was crowned as the winner of the fourth season of American Idol (May 25,2005). 24 years old girl won quite a number of awards. And she had her debut album,Some Hearts-which topped in many music charts. One of the songs- “I’ll stand by you” is specially recorded for Idol Gives Back Show. The single was released to Itunes for people to purchase it and download. The money earned from music downloads will be donated to the charity. I’ve been listening to this song on 987fm. I find the lyrics quite meaningful. I think it’s useful to sing to our friends who are lost now. Support them, tell them that you love them so much.

I’ll stand by you- Carrie Underwood

Oh, why you look so sad?
Tears are in your eyes
Come on and come to me now
Dont be ashamed to cry
Let me see you through
cause Ive seen the dark side too
When the night falls on you
You dont know what to do
Nothing you confess
Could make me love you less

Ill stand by you
Ill stand by you
Wont let nobody hurt you
Ill stand by you

So if youre mad, get mad
Dont hold it all inside
Come on and talk to me now
Hey, what you got to hide?
I get angry too
Well Im a lot like you
When youre standing at the crossroads
And dont know which path to choose
Let me come along
cause even if youre wrong

Ill stand by you
Ill stand by you
Wont let nobody hurt you
Ill stand by you
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And Ill never desert you
Ill stand by you

And when…
When the night falls on you, baby
Youre feeling all alone
You wont be on your own

Ill stand by you
Ill stand by you
Wont let nobody hurt you

Ill stand by you
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And Ill never desert you
Ill stand by you
Ill stand by you
Wont let nobody hurt you
Ill stand by you
Wont let nobody hurt you
Ill stand by you

S.H.E’s album was out quite some time. But i got to listen to it only just now. While i was surfing the net, some tunes are very familiar. It’s related to Jay Chou. The song is playing now. Look at the lyrics clearly. The lyrics is made of song titles of Jay’s albums. If you are unfamiliar with Jay’s song, let me highlight for you. The actual titles are highlighted this way. However, the lyrics may also show some part of the song title, which will be highted this way.

Beside this song, I also love songs like 中国话, 听袁惟仁弹吉他, 五月天

So, here you go.. the lyrics..

The song-

Itchy Scalp? Use Head & Shoulders

June 5th, 2007 Posted 1:05 pm

I was finally discharged! Yesterday, i went for my checkup. While waiting, there was this uncle sitting 3 seats away from me. My mum and I was sitting on those chairs in a row. He was scratching and scratching his head with gigantic force. While that uncle was scratching, the chairs kept rocking, rocking and rocking. I stared at the uncle, but he didnt notice me. So inconsiderate. So, my mum and I had to endure the irritating rocki-ness of the chairs. I should recommend that uncle to use Head & Shoulders. H&S Anti-dandruff shampoo is highly recommended!!

After waiting for so long, it’s finally my turn to look for Dr Chia. After close examination, Dr Chia said, “You can discharged”. I was soo happy. “Are you sure? So, i no need to come back again? How’s my condition?” Doctor smiled and said, “Improved!”. “Are you sure? oh thank you!” This was my first time seeing Dr Chia. After my consultation, my mum told me that Doctor looked familiar.(she thinks that Dr chia was my brother’s doctor when he was a baby)

Then, went Central shopping centre above Clarke Quay MRT Station. Despite the fact that there are still many shops under construction, there are still alot of shops available for me to shop. But most of the boutiques sell expensive clothes. I bought a korean-style dress for $31.20 at Vogue.(my mum managed to “bargain” with the shop assisstant for a cheaper price) As we walked down the stretch of shops, we saw another shop selling fashionable clothes. All the items were imported from Korea and the prices are much more reasonable. I bought 2 tops, together at $49.

I cant wait to shop again (although i’ve got alot of clothes in my wardrobe)

Reality TV gone wrong.

If you recalled, one beautiful day last week, you saw this news about this reality show-The Big Donor Show whereby a 37 year old terminally ill woman(Lisa) with an inoperable brain tumor, giving away her kidney to 3 people who needed a kidney transplant. Out of the 3 contestants, she has to choose who will be the “lucky winner” to get her kidney. Viewers were able to text Lisa to help her make the decision on who should be the recipient of the kidney.

I was appalled when BNN eventually broadcasted the program Netherlands on Friday 1 June, instead of stopping it. I find that it is very morally wrong to get our entertainment from people’s suffering. But thank god, it was a hoax. BNN then explained that the purpose of this reality show was to highlight the needs for kidney in Netherlands. And the “terminally ill” woman Lisa was actually an actress, but the three contestants are genuine kidney failure patients who are still looking for a suitable kidney for transplantation. The purpose of the show is to raise awareness of how much patients live their lives and how much organ donors are needed. But i think the adverse effect is greater than what the producer wants to emphasize.

Even before the broadcast, many criticised the about the show. The show had set off a storm of criticism about Reality show. According to a survey with Dutch television viewers, 75% of them were determined that they will not watch the broadcast. The show was even condemned by Jan Peter Balkenende, Dutch PM.

I dont think such issue is a matter of joke that we can play on. It is morally wrong. First place, how can the lives of the patients be controlled by viewers’ decision? (So you call this survivor of the fittest??) I think Big Donor Show has gone overbroad.

Deprive for love?

Are you? But I’m not. tell you more at the later part.

Yesterday had a long long chat with my CHARBOHS! Like what one of them mentioned in her blog. We chatted, complained to each other whatever is bothering us, solving each other’s problems. We chatted from 1144pm to 0232am. I kinda miss the days we can really get together, sit down together to vent out our frustration. Three of them are what i called GOOD SISTERS, GOOD LISTENING EAR. They are someone i cherish alot, and take their comments seriously. Cause they are my friends. Friends who will scold me when i did something wrong, praise me when i’m correct. After talking to these 3 girls, i felt so refreshed! Cant imagine how long our chat can go if 4 of us are together chatting. Each of us got our problems(does sher have? dont think so..she’s a happy girl.)

While chatting, i saw claris’s nick. Then i replied her nick. Then the rest changed their nick. So, i slept quite late and woke up quite late. Today, i didnt do any revision. Bad me!  For the whole day, i was modifying my blog template. I was reading blog articles regarding etiquette of blogging, how to attract blog readers, create cache blog title. And seriously, i need to think what i want my web for. I dont want my web to be just a blogging platform for me to say what happened in my personal life. I need more research man! (For those who dont know what’s that, you will know it soon.)

And now, back to the blog title. I saw tk’s msn nick-U pple are so love deprived. I didnt think too much and msg him about his nick. After sometime, i realised the hidden cache he was trying to say. Actually, his nick was referring to us- claris, sher, shir and me.

Talking about love, today will be a memorable day for two newly wed. One is my daddy’s friend’s daughter. another one is S.B.eng’s distant relative? (and finally no1 bug me to chat =x) Then daddy and mummy just came back and gave me the wedding souvenier. It’s a bride teddy key chain. So cute.. Suddenly, it reminds of my 50-cent bear, linking to the happy moments i had with my sisters club. (Sorry..im getting emo..)

It’s the Dragon’s fault?

If you’ve read yesterday’s newspaper, a 19 years old girl, Shi Ying who got ABE for her A levels couldnt even get into any of the 3 local universities in Singapore. This year is the Dragon Year Intake. There will be more people fighting for the positions in the universities. Local universities NTU, NUS, SMU reported that there’s an increase in applications and cited that the Dragon Year Effect as being a contributory factor. Dragon Year- is considered auspicious in the Chinese Calender. And during 1987 (if i didnt get the year wrong.let’s flip back my history notes), our Singapore government encouraged families to have more children by giving incentives. That’s why in 1988, there was a baby boom.

An MOE Spokesman said that they have already increase the number of university places  and the Dragon Year Effect had nothing to do with the students not getting a place in the Universities.

Adapted from Straits Times

The ministry also did not buy the argument that standards have gone up and students with average grades are finding it tougher to get into university.

Wonder how the desperate teens will do when they cant get into local universities. It is impossible to ask the Dragon Years babies who did not score well for their A levels to retake A levels again, as the old syllabus had been phased out after this dragon year batch. So, those who didnt get their positions in the universities got to- 1) study overseas, 2) start working, 3) Private Universities in Singapore.

I was chatting with one of my pjc friends. His girlfriend(i know her just as a normal friend) scored AAB, but couldnt get herself into the local universities. Providing the fact that she failed her GP. And this girl has to study overseas at Melbourne. Imagine a 19 years old girl, who has to adapt with the new environment and start everything all over again?

(According to my Gp notes..)Singapore is trying to attract foreign talent, but yet, leaking our own local talent out. When these Singapore students graduate from the foreign universities, by then, they have already adapted to the environment and culture. And they may stay and contribute back to the society. Isnt this “leakage of local talents to others”?

Singapore Education system is highing up. Syllabus have been changing to accomodate with the fast pacing society. Like now, everyone needs to know some IT skills. So, classroom lessons are making teaching more interesting through E-learning. Students need to learn to use the Internet, submit assignments online to their teachers. In the past, a normal degree allows you to use it as a passport to the working society. Now, a normal degree is not enough.

How will our future generation survive?

I guessed most of us should have heard about the pull out of University of New South Wales, UNSW? Because of that, Singapore’s three local universities extended their application deadlines from 1 June to 4 June. Does the closure of UNSW shows that the students may be left stranded, without a university to go to? Student’s dreams are shattered.

I’ve surfed and search some information about the news and how people react with the pull out of UNSW.

Adapted from My What Nots

It’s such a pity the UNSW has decided to close down in Singapore just 3 months after opening.  This has shocked the academic field and the students who have gave up their places at NUS and NTU to study at UNSW here are the worst hit.  At the moment, many of them are at a loss, not knowing what to do.

Adapted from CNA

As with UNSW and other multinational corporations, when they pull out, Singaporeans have to pick up the pieces, whether they be lost jobs, missed opportunities or dashed dreams.

June 1st, 2007 Posted 11:55 pm

Alert to all Singet broadband users who are using 512kbps and 1500kbps. You’ve got a free upgrade to a faster broadband speed of 3Mbps.

From 31 May 2007, subscribers on 512kbps and 1500kbps Unlimited BroadBand plans will also enjoy more mileage – with quicker page loading, smoother multimedia streaming and seamless online gaming. This will be at exactly the same price that they are currently paying.

All residential customers on 512kbps Unlimited Plans will see their surfing speeds automatically accelerated up to 1Mbps, while customers on 1500kbps Unlimited Plans will have their speeds doubled to 3Mbps.

Sources from: http://home.singtel.com/news_centre/news_releases/2007_05_30.asp

I think this is great. Is like a super great deal when speed is faster and we can do much more things. This also means that i can also play Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG)?

I think subscribers like me should give a few claps to Singnet! woohoo.

When bro showed me the Singnet Letter about the upgrade, i immediately switch on my com and checked my internet connection, whether is it like what they said- 3Mbps. I was consulting Sbeng about where can i check my internet connection, and he gave me this.

So, i tested and this is the result.

For those who do not know the connection speed, you can try speedtest.net. It’s kinda fun. Once you logged in to the web, click on the triangle thingy that shows Singapore, and automatically, the program will check your internet connection.
